RIDING THE WAVES LEARNING HOW TO FLOW In this topic we will discuss Flow State and how engaging in a regular practice effects our daily lives. In learning how to flow, we can apply these same concepts to the stresses of life outside the hoop. We don’t cry when we drop the hoop, do we? We pick it up and try again. This lesson can be applied to failure in life as well. The art of hoop dance or other movement influences our actions, thought process and the way we communicate with our family, friends and the world. Attendees can share their experiences to cultivate more understand of the benefits of these daily practices.

Living foods get a lots of attention, but what are they? In essence, a living food is something that has an active culture. Many of the places around the world that we think of as “Cultured” are also in the practice of culturing foods: Japan cultures soy products: miso, tamari, tempeh, etc.; the French have an extensive cheese and wine history; Germany, cheese, krauts, and beer. There is a magic in these livings foods that gives us a biota so complex it is almost worthless to explain the inner workings. In addition more and more research is pouring in about the end of life, as plant material is broken down by fungus, producing a vast suite of complex chemistry, and amazing health properties of mushrooms. There is also a magic in these end processes, and if one looks closely, it is hard to distinguish the process of creation from the process of destruction: It is here that we find super foods, super nutrients and super health! Join Health Coach and Medicinal Chef Zachary Mazi on this wondrous adventure into the cultures of life and death in food, and get intimate with the circles of super nutrition!
CircleCycleCymbal Part lecture, and part hands-on, this workshop explores the many circles, cycles, and cymbals around us. With a focus of history, nature, science, art, dance, music, and of course hooping, we will make connections which will lead into better understanding ourselves and hence moving with a heightened awareness through our ever-changing hoop dance. Take this journey from the contemplative to the expressive, from the analytical to the intuitive. We will meet in the middle and radiate outward.

THE ART OF FAILURE FROM THE EYES OF A PERFECTIONIST I am a perfectionist. I am my own worst critic. I have an undying need to succeed, or more specifically, not to fail. Fortunately, hula hooping has brought me to the realization that failure is an absolute necessity for success. In the past year I have battled with the big F yet again. Through training in a professional track circus program with coaches from companies like Cirque du Soliel, I have spent many sleepless nights questioning my own definitions of success and failure. In a society that conditions us to thrive on praise it can be hard to constantly hear the words “That was close, but try again”, rather then… “Good job Luna, that was absolutely perfect”. The truth is, I am a big fat failure, and so are you. Failure is at the root of who we are and where we are going. Only once we embrace failure can we truly understand the path to our success. Let us fearlessly fail on a regular basis. Let us realize that failure doesn’t have be painful, embarrassing, or discouraging. Can we discover the secret power of grace and balance within failure in a society that values perfection and praise above all else?
BIO: Luna is known for her fusion of modern dance, traditional circus skills, and musicality within hula-hoop dance. As a coach, she connects with her students through accessible vocabulary, a sense of humor and a serious attitude of positive empowerment. Luna began her career in 2006, through performing for world-renowned band “The String Cheese Incident”, touring across America to high profile music festivals. In 2008 she was hired by Samsung Mobile to perform in India in promotion of the 2008 Olymipic Games. In 2011 she co-founded an esteemed circus company in Kansas City Missouri, called “MoonDrop Circus”, which is still successful today. The following year, she was awarded “2012 Hoop Instructor of the Year on Hooping.org, and was recently nominated for “Female Hooper of the Year” in 2013. Every year, in collaboration with her sister, Shakti Sunfire, she hosts the Electric Forest hoop Troupe contest, and the annual advanced hula-hoop immersion; called In-Depth in Hawaii.
Over the past year Luna has been training under rhythmic gymnastics coach and Cirque du Soliel performer Rebbecca Sukhanova, in Pendulum Aerial Arts’ professional track circus program. In this Portland based company, she has studied hand balancing, flex, adagio, and aerial acrobatics. In addition she has been blessed with the opportunity to perform hula-hoop within the professional company. Luna sees the acrobat as a living metaphor, epitomizing true harmony of mind, body and spirit, allowing us space to connect to the inner-self that often gets buried under the tyranny of the everyday. “Circus empowered the part of me that hid silently behind the words I can’t and today it is my mission to carry on this gift to any and all who cross my path.” -Luna
