TRACING: Tracing is a technique that marries familiar manipulations of the hoop (such as core hooping, lifts & drops, and Samurai techniques) with an additional supportive connection with our prop. It can be ephemeral or sustained, and it has an inherent soft sensuality and potential quietness about it that makes this technique particularly entrancing. When Tracing, there is often a feeling of suspension of time and motion similar to that pause between bringing the breath into the body and releasing it back out. We will explore slowing down the revolution while playing that fine line between maintaining and releasing control. At times we will be guiding the hoop and at times the hoop will guide us. Passivity and assertion. Softness and certainty.
BIO: I’ve has been hooping for nearly a dozen years ever since the woman who later became known as Spiral generously handed me a hoop beneath the big oak tree at Weaver Street Market in Carrboro NC. I’ve been a devoted (and grateful) student of Jonathan Baxter from the time he began to teach and write the HoopPath and his approach has guided me to find my own voice with this round plastic instrument. I’ve been very fortunate to journey on my own hoop path in the company of a very beautiful local hoop community as well as travel the world teaching with and learning from other hoopdancers in Japan, Finland, the UK, Indonesia, Canada and much of the US. This will be my 6th Hoopcamp and it is a great honor to be invited back to teach for the 3rd time.
Shuffle and Throw: A Flow Arts Expansion Pack!
A fun card and dice game to push through stagnant flow habits and expand your current practice, and create choreography phrases while you’re doing it. Within this workshop, we’ll learn how to build our own decks of cards of conceptual movements and an ever-expanding technical skills deck, and learn to incorporate dice throws to determine how to string it all together. We will go over the basic elements of dance and how we can learn to incorporate that into our phrases. We’ll identify our flow ruts, start accessing some of the cool moves we’ve learned but have never assimilated into our practices, and feel out how to transition between them according to the draw of the cards. As we go along, we’ll be recording in a journal all of these short phrases that can eventually be jointed into full routines.

HOOPING BEHIND THE BODY Behind the Body is the unexplored plane in hooping and yet there are dozens of moves, tosses, rolls and poses hoopdancers can use to add flourish to our hoopdances while also opening our hearts and shoulders. Hooping behind the back makes for great photographs and is also great fun. These moves are part Bob Fosse jazz dance, part Vegas showgirl, part ninja. Please bring a yoga strap (or the belt to your bathrobe) because we are going to begin with a series of warm-up stretches to increase our range of motion and flexibility in both our shoulders and arms. These stretches are good for healing and preventing injuries and great for our posture.
FANCY FOOTWORK FOR HOOPERS This class covers hooping on the legs and feet, both upright and while laying on the back, but it also explores footwork patterns, traveling steps, spins, turns and pirouettes, leaps, knee spins, one-leg balances, and a variety of step-throughs.

Living foods get a lots of attention, but what are they? In essence, a living food is something that has an active culture. Many of the places around the world that we think of as “Cultured” are also in the practice of culturing foods: Japan cultures soy products: miso, tamari, tempeh, etc.; the French have an extensive cheese and wine history; Germany, cheese, krauts, and beer. There is a magic in these livings foods that gives us a biota so complex it is almost worthless to explain the inner workings. In addition more and more research is pouring in about the end of life, as plant material is broken down by fungus, producing a vast suite of complex chemistry, and amazing health properties of mushrooms. There is also a magic in these end processes, and if one looks closely, it is hard to distinguish the process of creation from the process of destruction: It is here that we find super foods, super nutrients and super health! Join Health Coach and Medicinal Chef Zachary Mazi on this wondrous adventure into the cultures of life and death in food, and get intimate with the circles of super nutrition!

BIO: With a background in dance since the age of three, Briana Kai has been exploring creative movement her whole life. Beginning with Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Hip Hop, and later expanding into Salsa, Samba, Belly Dance, Afro-Brazilian, and Odissi Indian Temple Dance, artistic fusion has become culmination of years of exposure to diverse styles and dance cultures. Finding deep healing in the sacredness of movement and the devotion of dance, naturally Briana was drawn to develop a regular yoga practice to compliment her dancing. Completing her Pilates certification with Polestar Pilates in 2008, she began to explore the therapeutic and healing qualities of various movement modalities. Â Teaching dance and movement to children of all ages since she was ten years old, Briana loves to share practices to elevate and empower the youth to be conscious co-creators of their own reality and honor the body temple. As an accomplished singer, music has a great impact in her practice over the years, and she loves to share the harmonizing and transcendental effects of the combination of movement and music in her classes. Finding the universal love and oneness through dance blending with the spiritual awareness of yoga, fusion is the natural progression; creating a sacred space with our own body temples through devotional disciple and practice results in a happy, healthy and holy life.

http://aerialartssantacruz.com/

BEGINNING POLE ACROBATICS & SPINS
In this beginning pole acrobatic and spinning workshop we will be learning some of the basic universal pole moves, positions and spins that have made pole dance and acrobatics so popular! Technique plays an important role in this gymnastic sport, and you will walk away from this workshop with a good grip on beginning pole moves and spins as well as the technique needed to implement further advanced positions and inversions. And, just as important it is to execute these moves and spins, learning how to gracefully enter and exit them is equally crucial. No need for any rigorous dance, fitness or acrobatic experience prior to taking this workshop; you will gain the exact skills that you need to take away a fantastic foundation (and mini-routine!) on the pole.
POLE CONDITIONING AND STRETCHING In this pole conditioning and stretching workshop we will be gaining the musculature of an elite athlete, after all that’s what pole acrobatics is all about! You will learn how to strengthen muscles, tendons and ligaments indigenous to the pole all while elongating them and creating a lithe, lean look. You will not only feel stronger and more empowered, but also beautiful and enlightened; there’ss something to be said about the way that Greek Gods looked while perched atop Mount Olympus. Keep this image in mind while on your way to the best shape of your life via pole conditioning and stretching, nothing compares. Tabata method (high intensity interval training) is used in some parts of the workshop. Novice fitness students thru advanced athletes welcome!

After dedicating years of daily practice and realizing this was a way of living, she decided to complete Yoga Alliance certification with Rusty Wells and with Mark Stephens in 2007. She currently teaches yoga at Peacebank yoga studio, teaches aerial silk at several studios, and is a fire dance performer. Her teachings offer a playful and challenging experience where students evolve, celebrate, and are flowing with purpose. Her intention is to share the healing medicine, awakening truth , and divine connection that the yoga practice offers. When Jem is not practicing yoga in San Francisco, teaching all over in the Bay Area or dancing with the community, you can find her spinning with a hula hoop or flying with her aerial silk.

THE NINE SQUARE Two Hoop Workshop This workshop will focus on the idea of the Nine-Square grid. Through visualization and some arranging of hoops we will create a visual representation of this grid and discuss the impact it has on how we move even if it has yet to be acknowledged by the individual. Following this with some brief arm-circle drills we will begin to explore the Nine-Square through anti-spin’s, in-spins and caps. While this workshop will be focused on two-hoops there is still much to be gained from understanding the Nine-Square when it comes to single hooping and all of the movements discussed in the workshop are possible (and simpler) with one hoop.
BIO: Matt started hooping in 2012 and it was love at first rotation. After being inspired by the 2012 Electric Forest Hoop Troupe videos, Matt found his first hoop goal and locked his sights on entering the contest in 2013. From hundreds of videos he was selected along with 15 others to travel to Michigan to attend, perform and teach at the festival. On the ride back to New Jersey he decided that he had a new goal: to share, connect, perform and teach with the amazing and always loving hoop community. In July of 2013 Matt was contacted about attending Hoop Camp and immediately jumped at the opportunity despite being unsure of how he would make it from New Jersey to California. Combining a fundraiser, workshop, fire jam and party into one Matt was able to successfully finance the trip out to perform at Hoop Camp in 2013. “I am so grateful to be returning to Hoop Camp in 2014 as an instructor, it is yet another one of my now endless list of goals I am happy to cross off in 2014. I cannot wait to connect and share with all of you in September!”

Loving Second Current Before you run away screaming, consider why? Sure, it feels righteously badass to hoop in our native direction – but isn’t fluidity in both directions truly badass? And beyond that, working both directions is one of our greatest allies in injury prevention and preserving balanced alignment. Let’s put the beginner brain on and add a heaping serving of compassion, and peel back the awkwardness and avoidance of our 2nd current. We’ll break down some basic opposing activations at the waist, and take a good hard look at that elusive second current shoulder hooping. It will never feel native, so let’s dig deep and fall in love with the unique softer side of your hoop practice.

In this workshop we will explore a hoop technique I love to call the contact wobble, it has also been called the no-handed smear. It involves continuous folding of the hoop to create a coin roll type effect with the hoop on the body. I've been playing with this technique for almost two years now and it's my very favorite way to manipulate the hoop. Over time, the movements become so subtle that it appears as if the hoop is magically rotating with you freely dancing in the hoop. Not only is it my favorite thing to do in the hoop, it is also my favorite thing to teach. It is challenging for everyone, no matter how long you've been hooping, but after putting in a little time, everyone gets it!
This workshop will touch on Isolations, Swizzles, Jinxs and Fuzzles. Looking into the grid and playing with squares, figure 8's and looking for the spaces in between to find transition. Talking about how to make well behaved shapes on a wall plane.

THE ART OF FAILURE FROM THE EYES OF A PERFECTIONIST I am a perfectionist. I am my own worst critic. I have an undying need to succeed, or more specifically, not to fail. Fortunately, hula hooping has brought me to the realization that failure is an absolute necessity for success. In the past year I have battled with the big F yet again. Through training in a professional track circus program with coaches from companies like Cirque du Soliel, I have spent many sleepless nights questioning my own definitions of success and failure. In a society that conditions us to thrive on praise it can be hard to constantly hear the words “That was close, but try again”, rather then… “Good job Luna, that was absolutely perfect”. The truth is, I am a big fat failure, and so are you. Failure is at the root of who we are and where we are going. Only once we embrace failure can we truly understand the path to our success. Let us fearlessly fail on a regular basis. Let us realize that failure doesn’t have be painful, embarrassing, or discouraging. Can we discover the secret power of grace and balance within failure in a society that values perfection and praise above all else?
BIO: Luna is known for her fusion of modern dance, traditional circus skills, and musicality within hula-hoop dance. As a coach, she connects with her students through accessible vocabulary, a sense of humor and a serious attitude of positive empowerment. Luna began her career in 2006, through performing for world-renowned band “The String Cheese Incident”, touring across America to high profile music festivals. In 2008 she was hired by Samsung Mobile to perform in India in promotion of the 2008 Olymipic Games. In 2011 she co-founded an esteemed circus company in Kansas City Missouri, called “MoonDrop Circus”, which is still successful today. The following year, she was awarded “2012 Hoop Instructor of the Year on Hooping.org, and was recently nominated for “Female Hooper of the Year” in 2013. Every year, in collaboration with her sister, Shakti Sunfire, she hosts the Electric Forest hoop Troupe contest, and the annual advanced hula-hoop immersion; called In-Depth in Hawaii.
Over the past year Luna has been training under rhythmic gymnastics coach and Cirque du Soliel performer Rebbecca Sukhanova, in Pendulum Aerial Arts’ professional track circus program. In this Portland based company, she has studied hand balancing, flex, adagio, and aerial acrobatics. In addition she has been blessed with the opportunity to perform hula-hoop within the professional company. Luna sees the acrobat as a living metaphor, epitomizing true harmony of mind, body and spirit, allowing us space to connect to the inner-self that often gets buried under the tyranny of the everyday. “Circus empowered the part of me that hid silently behind the words I can’t and today it is my mission to carry on this gift to any and all who cross my path.” -Luna

Through dance, movement, fitness and nutrition. “The Hooping Body” is about embracing the fact that we are athletes of the circle. It’s a practice that requires time and dedication to our bodies! My goal is to inspire all Hoop Dancers to work on their physical conditioning outside of the hoop by strengthening and focusing on flexibility and in turn feel the benefits of this inside the hoop.

SoulWater Breathwork explores body movement, breath, sound and resistance work with the hoop to release blocked energies .. unlock the doors to inner dimensions .. rejuvenate your tissues .. refresh your Spirit! In our breath flows the stream of possibility for healing, personal growth, spiritual development, creativity and connection to our embryotic intelligence that lies deep beyond our rational minds. Through simple circular breathing, we dive into non-ordinary states of consciousness to explore and access our inner landscapes and connect with our ancient wisdom, heart and inner healer. We release subtle energies and receive inner nurturing. Working with the embodied elements of fire, water, earth, air and space — we swim into the deep waters of the unconscious to reconnect with our magical selves and Spirit.
